Speaker examines zombie marches and the Occupy movement

Rebecca Schneider, chair and associate professor of theatre arts and performance studies at Brown University, will present "Acting in Ruins: Late, Late Capitalist Time," which examines the Occupy Wall Street movement, among other things, at 4 p.m. Monday, March 19, in 40 Irvin Hall.

Schneider has written extensively on performance art, photography, architecture and "performative" everyday life.

In her talk, Schneider examines zombie marches that have been a favorite strategy in the Occupy movement. Dressed in torn clothes, with whiteface and fake blood, protest banks, and brokerage houses, according to Schneider.

She asks “whether on stage or on street, do theatrical actions that straddle the live and the dead ... have some peculiar purchase on the contemporary production of subjectivities termed ‘capital relations’?”

Her talk is sponsored by the department of English and co-sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures.
