University Senate action March 26

Monday March 26, University Senate heard a report from the Budget Taskforce Technical Committee presented by David Ellis, associate vice president for budgeting and analysis.

Senate received items on the consent calendar which included:


With the approval of the March 12, 2012 minutes, and the March 26, 2012 abbreviated minutes, Senate endorsed Senate Resolutions SR 12-18, SR 12-19, SR 12-20, SR 12-21, SR 12-22, SR 12-23, SR 12-24, and SR 12-25.

The next meeting of 2011-2012 University Senate will be held on Monday, April 2, 111 Harrison Hall. The meeting will immediately follow the adjournment of the 2012-2013 University Senate meeting to be conducted at 3:15 p.m. for the election of the 2012-2013 University Senate Executive Committee.

SR 12-18
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt proposed revisions to the Miami University Policy and Information Manual, Section 19.6.A, as set forth below:
    Faculty may ban the use of cellular telephones and other communication and storage devices during class periods and/or exam periods. This policy is not meant to conflict with reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
    Furthermore, University policy must read the same in all University documents; therefore, the policy as adopted in Miami University Policy and Information Manual, Section 19.6.A, should be stated in the Student Handbook, Section 1.6.

SR 12-19
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt the proposed revisions to the Standing Rules of University Senate, Executive Committee of University Senate.

SR 12-20
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate endorse the recommendations of the Awards and Recognition Committee, an advisory committee of University Senate, that the Distinguished Professor Award be renamed the University Distinguished Professor Award; and furthermore that this name change would be retroactive.
SR 12-20 carried by voice vote.

SR 12-21
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate endorse the recommendations of the Awards and Recognition Committee, an advisory committee of University Senate, as set forth below:
Distinguished Professor Award nominations of a member of the Miami faculty with at least eight years holding the rank of Professor should not be restricted; i.e., a person holding a chaired/endowed professorship may be nominated and considered for the Distinguished Professor Award.

SR 12-22
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt revisions to the Bylaws of University Senate, Section 6.C.2, Awards and Recognition Committee, as set forth below:
  • Six (6) tenured faculty members, at least one (1) of whom shall be a member of University Senate.
  • One (1) member who is a past recipient of the Benjamin Harrison Medallion, or Distinguished Professor Award, or Distinguished Service Award.
  • One (1) or more ex officio nonvoting member(s).
  • The Secretary of University Senate or his or her designee, who shall serve as Committee secretary.
    Additional administrators or staff members shall serve ex officio during consideration of any particular award as the terms of that specific award mandate.

SR 12-23
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate endorse the recommendation of the Awards and Recognition Committee the presentation of the Distinguished Service Award not be limited to a meeting of Faculty Assembly.

SR 12-24
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt the proposed new degree, Bachelor of Arts in Interactive Media.

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt the proposed revisions to the repeat course policy: Proposed course policy revisions
SR 12-25 carried by voice vote.

Twenty-five members of Faculty Assembly can challenge the resolutions by filing a petition with the office of the university secretary during the ten class days after publication in the e-Report.
