Miami mock trial fourth in nation

One of two teams from the Miami University James Lewis Family Mock Trial program placed fourth in the nation at the American Mock Trial Association National Championship Tournament held in Minneapolis April 13-15.

Team member Alex Block, sophomore foreign affairs and diplomacy major, won an All-American Attorney Award. Julie Luizzi, first year undecided College of Arts and Science major from Miami’s second team (992), won an All-American Witness Award. All-American awards are given only to the top 20 of the final field of nearly 300 witnesses or attorneys.

Forty-eight teams competed in the national tournament after starting the season with a field of more than 600 teams from more than 350 colleges and universities — making collegiate mock trial the largest academic competition in the country.

Duke University, coached by Alex Bluebond (Miami ’10; Duke JD ’13) former Miami mock trial member and coach, won the national tournament.

Members of the fourth place national team (Miami team 993) are:

Ian Ferrell,
business economics major and history minor from Massillon; Pavel Gurevich, finance major and supply chain and operations management double major from Solon; Brad Kent, senior history and political science double major from Dallas; Krista Pikus, senior interdisciplinary business management and psychology double major from Columbus; and Alycia Walker, senior political science major and women’s studies minor from Cincinnati.

Junior: Andrea Jackson, junior English literature major and business legal studies minor from Terrace Park.

Alex Block
, sophomore foreign affairs and diplomacy major from Evanston, Ill.; Claire Meikle, sophomore zoology major from Oxford; and Deborah O’Neal, sophomore political science major and history minor from Cleveland.

Miami’s (team 993) also placed first in the American Mock Trial Association Opening Round Competition Series tournament in Hamilton in March and won the American Mock Trial Association Pittsburgh Regional Tournament in February.

Miami’s program this year fielded five teams with forty-two students participating.

They are are coached by Dan Herron, professor of business legal studies and director of the Mock Trial program; Dan Haughey, Butler County Area III judge, attorney and visiting assistant professor of business legal studies; Neal Schuett, attorney and visiting assistant professor of business legal studies professor; Missi Schuett, student at Chase law school; Laura Tholke, attorney and visiting assistant professor of business legal studies; and Miami alumna Jade Smarda, attorney.

Founded by Herron in 1994, the program is the 2001 National Champion, and has regularly finished in the nation’s top 10 since its inception.

Pavel Gurevich, a Miami mock trial All-American Witness (2009 and 2011) and senior finance major, has been chosen to deliver the student commencement address at the Farmer School of Business recognition ceremony Sunday, May 6, at Millett Hall.

Members of Miami’s mock trial program also coach Oxford’s Talawanda High School mock trial teams, a growing program at the school. Coaches this year were seniors Ian Ferrell, Joe Luizzi, Krista Pikus and Alycia Walker; and juniors Mike Woeste (All-American Witness 2010) and James Sayre.
