Miami organizations receive Jefferson Awards for public service

Miami University's America Reads, America Counts and Adopt A School programs were awarded the Jefferson Awards for Public Service Certificate of Excellence.

The awards were presented at the National Youth Service Symposium in Cincinnati on Saturday, March 31.

Founded in 1975, the Jefferson Awards are designed to honor and recognize community and public service both locally and nationally in America. The awards seek to reward, inspire and activate volunteerism in communities, workplaces and schools around the country.

The Cincinnati Symposium was part of the National Youth Service Summit, a partnership among the Jefferson Awards, and Children Inc. that aims to recognize and celebrate the contributions of youth to the community and to showcase more than 100 service projects.

Three student leaders from Miami’s Office of Community Engagement and Service attended the event and hosted an information table highlighting the office’s tutoring programs. The Miami groups were also awarded a mini-grant of $250.

America Reads, America Counts and Adopt A School are some of the programs that led Miami to receive the Presidential Award in the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll last month.
