GREAL students recognized for outstanding work


The Department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages (with Arabic, Hebrew, and Hindi) presented awards and prizes to undergraduate students for their outstanding work.

The Jacques Breitenbucher Scholar for study in Russian and/or German for 2012-13 is Sarah Beaumont.

The Ruth Sanders Award, for outstanding graduating senior in German studies was presented to Daniel Hawk. (He also earned an award and a minor in Arabic, and received a Fulbright Award)

Awards for Outstanding Student in each level of the department's eight language and culture programs were presented to:

  • Sarah Shew, Sharah Cesler, and Daniel Hawk (Arabic)
  • Daniel O'Bryan, Trevor Cook, Nicole Crandall, and Thuong Le (Chinese)
  • Josh Kellern, Robert Alston, Danyelle Barton and Corbin Mathias (German)
  • Andrew Grinstein, Hayley Hamilton, Matthew Banchek, Ashley Barrett (Hebrew)
  • Cassandra Ford, Alex Mongomery (Hindi)
  • Jordan Komnick, Geoffery Mauer, Zhaoqain Xu, and Xuetong Zhou (Japanese)
  • Kayla Orta and Sang Le (Korean)
  • Courtney Kolodziej, Sarah McKinsey, Tamaz Jhashi, and Kimberly Bega (Russian).

In addition, four current and two recent GREAL students were recognized for receiving 2012-2013 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Awards: Elizabeth Bersin (Miami '11), Germany; Timothy Boll, Russia; Katelin Burke, Mongolia; Daniel Hawk, Germany; Joseph Harrison King (Miami '11), Azerbaijan; and Corbin Mathias, Germany.
