Senior electrical and computer engineering majors Chad Sobota and Robert Cole each received a $1,250 scholarship from the Institute of Navigation (ION).

They were awarded the scholarships based on their academic performance and their outstanding contributions and participation in navigation engineering. They were recognized at the ION Dayton Section annual dinner banquet June 21.

Both students are members of the senior capstone team that designed and built the Miami Red Blade, a multi-functional robot guided by differential GPS. Team Red Blade won second place at the ninth annual ION Robotic Lawn Mower Competition held May 31-June 2 in Dayton.

The Red Blade robot, built on a platform that can mow grass or plow snow, also won second place at the ION Autonomous Snowplow competition held this past February in Minneapolis. Team Red Blade also won first place at the Miami University Interdisciplinary Technology Development Challenge (MUITDC) this year.

Sobota, a fifth year senior, will become an Air Force officer after graduation next May. Cole will continue at Miami after graduation in December as a master’s degree student in computational science and engineering with adviser Jade Morton, professor of electrical and computer engineering and mentor for the Team Red Blade.
