Hot, dry and dusty renovations to make way for green at Cook Field

07/19/2012

Too hot and too dry describes the construction site at Cook Field as crews prepare for new synthetic turf, new irrigated natural grass and new restroom facilities.

John Seibert, senior project architect and manager, said they are on schedule despite the hot temperatures and dusty conditions.

“We could really use some rain to help moisten and compact the area for new turf. But, we are on schedule and the north half of Cook Field and the running track will be ready by August for student use.”

Renovations to Cook Field will improve use and playability of the university’s major recreational sports playing field. More than 7,500 students participated in intramural sports during the 2011-2012 school year.

Renovations include:

  • adding irrigation along with storm water retention for its water source;

  • planting new natural sports turf on the south half of the field and installing a synthetic turf surface on the north half of the field;

  • improving under-field storm drainage;

  • repaving the running track around the field;

  • replacing softball backstops;

  • adding a restroom and storage facility;

  • and reworking parking around Cook Field to enhance pedestrian access and improve vehicular safety.

The project construction budget is not to exceed $3,492,500 and has two construction phases: completing the northern synthetic field turf areas and running track in time for fall 2012 use; and completing the natural grass areas, storage and restroom facilities in time for spring 2013 use.

The west end of the south parking lot is closed for the summer. Several parking spaces around the perimeter will be closed periodically for installation of utilities, new curbing and related work.

Traffic flow and the majority of parking will be maintained at all times.
