Miami students spending summer studying abroad

More than 1,300 Miami University students are studying abroad this summer in more than 30 different countries, an increase of four percent from summer 2011.

This summer, 1,321 students are studying internationally. The study abroad effort at Miami is a collaborative among the office of international education, Lifelong Learning and Miami’s John E. Dolibois Luxembourg European Center (MUDEC), as well as many other departments and academic support units on campus.

Recently, Miami’s global assistance program received the United Educators 2012 Silver Grant, one of 10 grants awarded in the amount of $2,500 to support a culture of risk management best practices. United Educators is an insurance company owned and governed by member colleges, universities and other education organizations.

The Lifelong Learning-developed initiative will create e-learning modules for faculty, students and parents/families focused on health, safety and security, before, during and after study abroad/away programs.

“With this award, we will be able to efficiently and effectively connect parents and families, faculty, staff and students with the knowledge and resources for planning safe, educational and healthy travel experiences,” said Cheryl Young, director of Lifelong Learning.

The modules are being developed in collaboration with the Advanced Learning Technologies team in Miami’s IT services. The learning modules will be released over the upcoming year.

“Miami University is extending its global presence. As students and faculty prepare for travel and move around the world, they are supported in a coordinated effort by specialists in risk management and crisis response,” said Kim Logsdon, information design and program director of Lifelong Learning.
