IT services announces new organizational structure

Debra Allison, vice president for IT services and chief information officer, recently announced a new organizational structure for central IT (information technology) at an all-staff meeting.

The new structure, designed as part of the SSIP-IT (Support Services Implementation Project – IT) initiative, will deliver an estimated $509,000 in annual savings and focuses on improvements in governance, support services and application development.

Closely tied to the recommendations from the other portions of the SSIP-IT work, the reorganization reduces the number of management positions and seeks to maximize efficiency by having the remaining managers focus more on management responsibilities and less on operational work, and through aligning staff members based on the kind of work they perform.

At the top level, the new structure moves from five areas reporting to the vice president for IT to three: academic and administrative solutions, operations and infrastructure, and IT planning and strategy. Some positions were eliminated and others were created to reach the savings target as well as staff the organization to implement and sustain the opportunities recommended by SSIP.

While 17 IT services positions are being eliminated (13 vacant and 4 filled), seven new positions are being added, filled by direct appointment, internal search or external search. A significant number of IT services staff members will experience changes in their reporting line, responsibilities, and/or title. Nine positions from housing, dining, recreation and business services; physical facilities; and university advancement will move into the central IT organization.

Most changes will be in place by the beginning of the academic year, while others will take longer. Particular attention is being given to the transition of staff members who are moving into IT services from other units. Those transitions are being planned in collaboration with current managers to ensure as seamless a transfer as possible.

Both the current and the new IT services organizational charts are available as downloadable files on the IT services website. Questions about the new organization or any of the SSIP-IT initiatives may be directed to
