Forbes ranks Miami top public college in Ohio: Miami climbs 11 spots in national public university ranking


Miami University climbed 11 spots in America's Top Colleges 2012 list from Forbes magazine to become 35th in the nation among public universities. Miami ranked highest in Ohio among public universities. The list was released this week and highlights 650 private and public institutions nationwide.

The rankings are compiled by the Center for College Affordability for Forbes and assess institutions based on the following five general categories:

  • Post-graduate success, which accounts for 32.5 percent and is based on alumni pay and prominence;
  • Student satisfaction, which accounts for 27.5 percent and is based on professor evaluations and retention rates;
  • Debt, which accounts for 17.5 percent and penalizes schools for high student debt loads and default rates;
  • Four-year graduation rate accounts for 11.25 percent;
  • Competitive awards, which also accounts for 11.25 percent and is based on prestigious scholarships such as the Rhodes, the Marshall and the Fulbright.
