Convocation kicks off 2012-2013 academic year


Miami University kicks off the 2012-2013 academic year with University Convocation at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, on the south quad area in front of McCracken Hall. Jessica Goodell, author of Miami's Summer Reading Program book, Shade It Black: Death and After in Iraq, will be the featured speaker.

The convocation ceremony celebrates the start of a new academic year and signals the beginning of the Miami Experience for Miami's incoming class - more than 3,700 this year.

The schedule includes:

8:30-8:55 a.m.
Gathering of first-year students, faculty and staff, at south quad lawn behind Warfield Hall and the Sundial, in front of MacCracken. Faculty and staff are asked to arrive no later than 8:45 a.m. (no academic regalia will be required) and will be seated in chairs directly in front of the stage. Marshals and Student Orientation Undergraduate Leaders (SOULs) will be on-site to assist with seating.

9-9:50 a.m.
Procession of platform party and the convocation ceremony

10-11 a.m.
Student Discussion Sessions
Faculty and staff members will facilitate discussion sessions about the book. Sign up by contacting the office of liberal education at 9-7135.
