Fall 2013 academic calendar and addition of proposed winter session announced

Effective fall 2013, Miami University plans to move from a 16-week academic calendar to a 15-week format, including the addition of a proposed winter session in January 2014. The proposed winter session will be presented to the board of trustees for approval at its next meeting.

The University Senate Calendar Subcommittee, chaired by Maria Cronley, professor of marketing, proposed the plan in fall 2011 to University Senate. Senate approved four recommendations on Dec. 5, 2011.

The Academic Calendar Implementation Committee, chaired by Michael Kabbaz, associate vice president, office of enrollment management, formed in spring 2012. The committee has been working to ensure a smooth transition to a new academic calendar and to oversee the proposed winter session adoption.

The proposed schedule includes moving from a 16-week academic calendar to a 15-week format with the addition of a proposed winter session in January 2014 that creates opportunities for students to expand their academic options.

“The proposed winter session will provide a great benefit to our students and faculty through the creation of enhanced academic and other learning opportunities,” said Provost Bobby Gempesaw, executive vice president for academic affairs. “Students will have the opportunity to enrich their Miami academic experience through participation in the winter session by studying abroad, conducting research, completing an internship, or taking an additional course.”

Classes begin at the end of August and end in mid-May, with the proposed winter session lasting about three weeks. The 2014 proposed winter session would take place Jan. 2-25, 2014; however, some classes, including study abroad trips and other field experiences, may begin prior to Jan. 2.
