Tom Herbert named vice president for university advancement

Following a national search, Tom Herbert has been named Miami University's vice president for university advancement. Currently vice president for development at Dartmouth College, he will begin his new role Oct. 1.

At Miami, Herbert will lead an advancement staff of 92 in the areas of advancement services, alumni relations, development, and stewardship and donor relations. He will also serve as the executive director of the Miami University Foundation.

“I am very excited and privileged to join Miami University. I've long admired its deep commitment to the undergraduate experience. It is truly a unique place, and the opportunity to join President Hodge, his outstanding team and the advancement staff is very special,” said Herbert.

Herbert has served at Dartmouth since 2010. He began his development career in 1995 as a gift-planning officer at Drake University, where he also studied finance and management.

Herbert was the associate vice president for individual giving before assuming the role of vice president at Dartmouth. Prior to Dartmouth, he served in various roles at Indiana University from 2002-2009, including executive director of development and alumni programs for the college of arts and sciences, and vice president for universitywide programs for the Indiana University Foundation. He also served as the assistant vice president for development at the University of Michigan.

"Tom is an experienced development professional who has served at top universities. He has the vision and drive to further elevate the success of our advancement division. I am excited to work with him to deepen our connections with our alumni and friends," said David Hodge, Miami president.

Herbert has a bachelor’s degree in history from Northwestern University and a doctor of jurisprudence with honors from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law.
