Jerry Springer "Master Manipulator" Sept. 24

09/17/2012

Jerry Springer
Jerry Springer
Jerry Springer, a cultural and civic icon, leads the 2012-2013 Miami University Lecture Series with “Media Manipulation from the Master Manipulator” at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in Hall Auditorium.

Best known as host of the tabloid talk show “The Jerry Springer Show,” Springer has been the mayor of Cincinnati, political pundit, lawyer, award-winning newscaster for WLWT in Cincinnati, country recording artist, movie star, Broadway actor, progressive talk-radio broadcaster and political activist. He even competed on “Dancing with the Stars.”

He "arrived" as a true cultural icon when he was the featured character in "The Simpsons'" 1998 Halloween special.

Born in London in 1944, just after his family fled the Holocaust, Springer immigrated at age five to New York City with his family.

After earning a law degree from Northwestern University in 1968, he became a political campaign adviser to Robert F. Kennedy. After Kennedy’s assassination, Springer joined the Cincinnati law firm of Frost & Jacobs and spearheaded the movement in Ohio to lower the voting age from 21 to 18. In 1971, he won a seat on the Cincinnati City Council and served five terms before becoming mayor at the age of 33, with the largest plurality in the city's history.

The lecture is free, but tickets are required due to limited seating. Tickets will be available at the box office in Shriver Center beginning Wednesday, Sept. 19, for the Miami community and Friday, Sept. 21, for the general public.

Other speakers in the 2012-2013 Lecture Series are:

* Becki Donatelli and Sam Graham-Felson, “# Voting: Social Media and the 2012 Election,” at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15

* Rick Steves, “Europe Through the Back Door,” at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12

* Krista Tippett, “On Being: Spirituality in Modern Times,” at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28

* Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Science As A Way of Knowing,” at 8 p.m. Monday, April 8
