Miami’s open enrollment period for health insurance benefits in 2013 runs Oct. 1-31. Miami continues to offer a traditional (PPO) plan and a high deductible health plan with health savings account.
There are changes to the plan design and premiums, including that grandfathered spouse/partner coverage ends.
Effective Jan. 1, 2013, spouses and same-sex domestic partners will no longer be eligible for Miami’s health coverage if they are employed and have access to health coverage through their employers and if their share of the premium is 50 percent or less of the total health care premium of their employers.
Any Miami employee whose health insurance benefit covers a spouse or partner will be sent a Spouse/Partner Coverage Certification form that must be completed by the employee, spouse/partner and the spouse/partner’s employer, if applicable, and submitted to Employee Benefits & Wellness by Nov. 2.
Spouses/partners remain eligible for Miami’s coverage if they are:
• Not employed
• Married and both are employed at Miami
• Employed or self-employed and health plan premiums for coverage through their employer are more than 50 percent of the total monthly premium.
If an employer indicates that the spouse/partner is not eligible for enrollment effective January 1, 2013, Miami will accommodate spouses or partners until they are eligible for enrollment.
New for the traditional PPO plan beginning Jan. 1: Co-pays will not count toward the out-of-pocket maximum.
There are no changes to the high deductible health plan for 2013.

Several steps must be completed by Nov. 15 to qualify for Healthy Miami discounts of up to $30/covered employee and spouse.
A detailed brochure will be distributed soon outlining the plans, premiums, discounts and steps to take. Health screenings, one of the steps for a discounted premium, can be arranged starting with a schedule on the health and wellness site.
Miami’s human resources department has begun offering open enrollment information sessions on the Oxford, Hamilton and Middletown campuses, and will host Benefits & Wellness Fairs 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Hamilton, and Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Middletown and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in Oxford.
