Learn about the influence statistics have on sports

Miami University is hosting the 40th annual Statistics in Sports conference this weekend. The event, presented by the departments of mathematics and statistics, is Friday, Sept. 28, and Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Farmer School of Business.

Speakers from Bowling Green State University, Boston University School of Public Health and WhatIfSports.com will present and lead discussions on a variety of subjects addressing statistics and their influence on sports.

Presentations include:

  • On-Base Percentage: The Moneyball Statistic
  • What If ... How Stats Help Settle the Debate
  • Just for Kicks: Modeling Field Goal Success for Probabilities in Professional Football
  • Parity in Professional Sports: A Comparison of the NFL, NBA and MLB

On Friday evening, students will lead discussions on their contributed papers:
  • Hot Hand - When a shooter goes on an unbelievable streak, is it an anomaly or simple chance?
  • What Difference Can a Single Game Make?
  • Predicting Upsets during March Madness

On-site registration is available both days of the conference and registration is free for all Miami University faculty, staff and students. The main portion of the conference begins at 1 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday at 8 a.m.
