Judith Sessions, dean of the Miami University Libraries, has announced her retirement effective Dec. 31. She has been dean and university librarian at Miami since 1988.

“I step down knowing that the strength of our Libraries is its incredible staff,” Sessions said. The staff remains “to carry out our vision to be not only the library of today but also the future.”

Sessions' leadership and enthusiastic support for the infusion of technology into all aspects of learning has been evidenced since she joined Miami. She was involved in the planning and implementation of integrated library automation and efforts to establish OhioLINK, a statewide consortium for licensing electronic products and providing document delivery.

Among other accomplishments, she directed the “OhioView” project, a national geospatial prototype with the United States Geological Survey and NASA and established research help via instant messaging - contributing to her goals of making informational resources more accessible, providing educational opportunities and promoting diversity.

She has led a series of renovation projects, including a high-tech state-of-the-art electronic Thunder Room instructional space, and, most recently, the new BEST (business, engineering, science and technology) library in Laws Hall.

Sessions received the 2008 Miami University Distinguished Service Award, and she earned a Distinguished Service Award from the American Library Association in 1994.

A committee will be formed soon to search for Sessions’ replacement, according to Provost Bobby Gempesaw.
