Nicholas Money, the 2012 Sigma Xi Researcher of the Year, will present “The Four Mushrooms of the Apocalypse” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in room 100 of the art building.

Money, professor of botany and director of the western program in the College of Arts and Science, is recognized internationally as an expert in the field of fungal biology. In addition to his many scholarly publications, Money reaches a general audience through his popular books on fungi that are intended for a broad audience.

His presentation is suitable for all ages and audiences.

Money provides a preview of his lecture:

“As the planet warms, fungi are destroying crops and forest trees, infecting coral reefs, decimating amphibians, and exterminating bats.

Millions of tons of fungal spores swirl in the atmosphere and we suck them into our lungs with every breath. Could these allergenic particles be responsible for the skyrocketing numbers of asthma cases?

Bring your inhaler for a bleak, depressing, and thoroughly deflating story of planetary decline sweetened by the grandeur of microbial diversity. “

The lecture is sponsored by the Miami University chapter of Sigma Xi. Sigma Xi is an international scientific and research honor society supporting original work in science and technology.
