Celebrate the Brothers Grimm with fairy-tales scholar Jack Zipes

Folklore and fairy-tales scholar Jack Zipes will visit Miami University to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Brothers Grimm's Household Tales in a guest lecture series, Nov. 7 and 8.

His first talk, “Hyping the Grimms’ Fairy Tales,” begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in 322 McGuffey. It focuses on the historical background of the Grimms’ literary adaptations of fairy tales and the nature of publicizing such tales.

His second talk, “A Second Glance at Red Riding Hood’s Trials and Tribulations,” begins at 7 p.m. Thursady, Nov. 8, in 322 McGuffey and focuses on film adaptation of fairy tales. Zipes’s lectures will be accompanied by short films from recent movie adaptations. Both lectures are free and open to the public.

Zipes is a well-known American Germanist working on the topics of fairy tales, the Brothers Grimm and film adaptations of fairy tales. He is also editor and contributor to The Great Fairy Tale Tradition, the main text used in GER 231: German Folk and Literary Fairy Tales at Miami.

The lecture series is sponsored by the Humanities Center, the department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages, the film studies program, the School of Education, Society and Health, the Farmer School of Business, the classics department and the Center for American and World Cultures
