Veterans to be honored at university events

Miami students will gather to remember and honor those who have served in the armed forces. Veterans Day ceremonies are scheduled on the Oxford and regional campuses.

• Oxford campus: The Miami University Student Veterans Association (SVA) will host “Honoring All Who Served” at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the Sesquicentennial Chapel. Speakers include Rodney Coates, professor of sociology and gerontology and interim director, black world studies program; Col. Patrick Malay, chair of naval science; and student and veteran Les Dersham. Refreshments will follow the ceremony. All are welcome.

• Middletown Campus: A ceremony will be held noon-2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the Campus and Community Center. The ceremony will feature remarks from Miami students, faculty and staff, highlighting their ties to the armed forces. It will end with the dedication of the Veterans Memorial commissioned by the Miami Middletown Student Government (MMSG).

• West Chester campus: A Veterans Day program will be held at noon, Friday, Nov. 9, at the Voice of America Learning Center. An online photo archive of images of and by local veterans, a collaborative effort with the MidPointe Library, will be introduced.

• Hamilton Campus: The Miami Hamilton Student Government and Student Veterans Association hosted a Veteran’s Commemoration and Fundraising Event Nov. 4 in the Wilks Conference Center. The program included a luncheon and silent auction to benefit the Corporal Nicholas Olivas Scholarship that supports veterans in the criminal justice program. A flag-raising ceremony commemorated additions of the Branch Colors flagpoles to the Miami Hamilton campus Veteran’s Memorial.
