Oxford Empty Bowls: Saturday's soup luncheon benefits Oxford Community Choice Pantry

Oxford Empty Bowls, a benefit soup luncheon, will be held 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Oxford United Methodist Church (14 N. Poplar Street). The event, now in its 10th year, has been increasingly successful in its effort to both heighten awareness of food insecurity in the Oxford area and to raise funds for the Oxford Community Choice Pantry - last year Empty Bowls raised more than $6,200 for the Pantry.

The event brings together the works of Miami ceramics students, Oxford area potters, artists young and old and local cooks. Dennis Tobin, associate professor of art, and his ceramics students created hundreds of bowls for the event. Local potters who use the ceramics studio at the Art Center in Phillips Hall also donated bowls. This year Talawanda High School ceramics students contributed bowls, and a new partnership between the office of residence life, several Living Learning Communities and "You're Fired," a paint-your-own pottery studio in Oxford, collaborated to donate more than 250 decorated bowls to the event.

Empty Bowls luncheon guests choose from among bowls that were created, decorated and donated by students and Oxford area potters.

The bowls are filled with a choice of soups made by local cooks. Luncheon guests then keep their bowl as a reminder that “there are always empty bowls in the world.”

Homemade bread and desserts, and beverages donated by area businesses, will also be served.

Cost for the luncheon is $10; children under 10 may choose and fill a bowl for free.

Oxford Empty Bowls is co-sponsored by the art department with support from the office of community engagement and service and the office of residence life.
