Michael Benitez, social justice educator, speaker and activist, will present a lecture and workshop on Hip Hop and social justice at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in Leonard Theatre, Peabody Hall. His presentation will demonstrate how Hip Hop can be used as a tool for examining social justice issues, engage activism and cultivate a culture of consciousness in education. It is part of the annual Human Rights and Social Justice program organized by the Center for American and World Cultures.

Given the rise in interest and use of Hip Hop in education, says Benitez, he aims to provide diverse perspectives on the intersections of Hip Hop culture, the academy and activism. His workshop will demonstrate how Hip Hop can be effectively used as an educational pedagogy both in form and content.

Benitez will engage the audience in critical dialogue through different interactive activities, including spoken word and poetry, music, reflective exercise and multimedia analysis to explore issues of oppression, privilege, equity and knowledge representation.

His presentation, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures with support from a number of campus organizations.
