Distinguished Lecture in Microbiology Nov. 28

William (Clay) Fuqua, professor of biology at Indiana University, Bloomington, will present "Sticking to your point: deployment and function of a unipolar polysaccharide adhesin by Agrobacterium tumefaciens" at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in 218 Pearson Hall. It is the Distinguished Lecture in Microbiology sponsored by the microbiology department.

Fuqua’s research focuses on cell-to-cell interactions in prokaryotes. Although a unicellular view of bacteria has dominated microbiology for years, many different bacteria are now known to communicate with and physically contact other bacteria, allowing coordinated behavior and the formation of complex multicellular structures, says Fuqua.

Such microbial interactions often come into play when microbes colonize a host. Therefore, the study of the interactions of microorganisms may have a significant impact on combating disease and promoting beneficial host-bacterial interactions.

Fuqua’s lab studies microbial cellular interactions in several contexts, including the process of intercellular signaling called “quorum-sensing” among the plant-associated bacteria Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Rhizobium sp. NGR234, and among the natural microbial consortia of marine sponges.

At Indiana University, Fuqua is affiliated with the department of biochemistry, the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics and the Indiana Molecular Biology Institute.

In addition to being honored for his research accomplishments, Fuqua has received multiple teaching awards and has served as a Waksman Foundation for Microbiology Lecturer under the auspices of the American Society for Microbiology.

The Distinguished Lecture in Microbiology is free and open to the public.
