Fraternities face sanctions following August incident

12/02/2012

The Miami University chapters of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity have been found responsible for violating Miami's Code of Student Conduct in relation to actions surrounding an exchange of fireworks early Aug. 19.

Upon investigation of that incident, police found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the fraternity houses. A summary suspension was initially leveed. Following the university’s judicial process that includes appeals, the chapters were found responsible for violating these sections of the Code of Student Conduct: 106A (Drug possession); 106B (Possession of drug paraphernalia); 107 (Possession of fireworks); 113 (Disorderly Conduct).

Sanctions include suspension and revocation of recognition of Phi Kappa Tau through Aug. 26, 2013. The fraternity may petition for reinstatement of recognition no sooner than April 1, 2013.

Sanctions for Sigma Alpha Epsilon include suspension/revocation of recognition through the first day of classes, fall 2014. The fraternity may petition for reinstatement of recognition no sooner than Feb. 1, 2014.

For both fraternities, these sanctions also apply:

  • For the first two years after reinstatement at least 50 percent of the members living in the chapter house must be a junior in class standing.

  • The chapter will provide a live-in adviser selected by the Corporation Board and/or the national headquarters for at least the two years following reinstatement. A representative of the Cliff Alexander Office will be involved in the selection process.

  • Members will receive education on fire safety prior to moving into the fraternity.

  • The chapter will present a plan for compliance with the Community Advancement Program after reinstatement has been approved but prior to the return to campus.
