Graduate students take top honors in research forum


Miami University's graduate students received top honors during the fall semester Graduate Research Forum held on the Oxford campus. Nearly 150 graduate students presented their research and scholarship.

The top three oral presentations were:

  • Stephen Holtkamp, geology and environmental earth science, "Template matching to build a high quality earthquake catalog of the 2011 Youngstown, Ohio seismic sequence and test its relation to hydraulic fracturing and wastewater injection."

  • Robert Magorien, architecture and interior design, "Through a vale of Tears: Architecture and the contemplative act of pilgrimage as healing and discourse"

  • Jennifer Tully, geology and environmental earth science, "A Detailed Pollution Study of Great Miami River Sediment in the Industrial Corridor of Hamilton, Ohio"

The top three poster presentations were:

  • Yunluan Cui, botany, "Development and Function of Constricting Ring Traps of Nematophagous Fungi"

  • Tomasz Marchlewski, geology and environmental earth science, "In-situ immobilization of goethite-adsorbed As and Pb by formation of Pb-As-apatite"

  • Jamie Pierson, psychology, "Expression of trace fear conditioning requires the dentate gyrus, but not CA1 or CA3, of the dorsal hippocampus"

All presentations were judged by faculty and graduate alumni judges. Criteria focused students’ ability to effectively present their work to a non-expert audience and ability to answer questions effectively.
