"Angels in America" selected for Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Showcase

12/19/2012

The Miami University department of theatre’s recent production of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches," directed by Rosalyn Erat Benson, was recently selected to take part in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival's (KCACTF) Region 3 Festival. The annual event will take place Jan. 8-12.

One of the first scenes of Miami's production will be performed at the festival, featuring theatre majors Collin Campana and Daniel Lees as characters Prior and Louis. The "Evening of Scenes" will be performed on Jan. 9.

Out of 75 associate productions across Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and part of Ohio, just over a dozen universities were nominated by their respondents, and this year only 5 have been chosen by the regional selection committee of KCACTF to take part in the Festival. Invited productions are asked to perform a scene of under 10 minutes, and present it with minimal tech.

"This is really a great honor," said Gion DeFrancesco, associate professor of theatre, who coordinates Miami's involvement in KCACTF and sits on the Region 3 Selection Committee. "Only the best associate productions are nominated to be part of the Evening of Scenes. It's a great chance to share the outstanding work our students do with other theatre folks in our region."

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide which has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States.

The KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country, where theater departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents.

Miami's production of "Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches" was performed Nov. 14–18 and directed by Rosalyn Erat Benson, assistant dean of the School of Creative Arts at Miami and a visiting instructor of theatre.
