A $100,000 bequest from the estate of Russell Baldwin and Dorothy Curtis Baldwin (Miami '44) is supporting student scholarships within Miami University's School of Education, Health and Society.
The Baldwins were active residents of Euclid where Russell, a World War II veteran and graduate of the Ohio State College of Optometry, ran a successful optometry practice. Dorothy served as receptionist and bookkeeper for the practice, and was active in numerous civic organizations.
In addition to their optometry practice sponsoring dozens of Euclid-area youth sports teams, Russell was active in the Lions Club. Dorothy was a past president of the Lake Shore Garden Club and a former chair of the Mayor’s Traffic Safety Committee for Cleveland. She also logged more than 7,000 volunteer hours at Euclid Hospital. For 26 years, the couple hosted an annual wine-tasting fundraiser at their home in support of the Euclid-area American Field Service Association.
Dorothy, who followed in the footsteps of her mother as a teacher, graduated from Miami with a bachelor’s in education. She went on to teach at Upson Elementary School in Euclid before leaving to support her husband’s optometry practice. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority while at Miami and remained active with the sorority’s Lake Shore Chapter for more than 50 years.
“The Baldwins were generous people who believed in making a difference in the lives of those around them,” said Brad Bundy, associate vice president for University Advancement. “It is humbling that Dorothy never forgot her time at Miami and fitting that the couple’s legacy of generosity will live on in the generations of Miami students who will benefit from the Baldwins’ planning and support.”
The bequest supports The Miami University campaign For Love and Honor which, as the University’s most successful fundraising campaign, has raised more than $466 million in support of Miami’s priorities.
