Krista Tippett, host of the national public radio program “On Being,” will speak at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in Hall Auditorium. Her talk is part of the Miami University Lecture Series.

“On Being” (formerly “Speaking of Faith”) explores the big questions at the center of human life, from the boldest new science of the human brain to the most ancient traditions of the human spirit.

The program, which began as an occasional series on Minnesota Public Radio in 1999, is now heard weekly on hundreds of public radio stations in the U.S. and globally via Internet and podcast.

In 2008, the program was awarded the highest honors in both broadcasting and electronic media — a Peabody Award and a second Webby Award. “On Being” is the only public radio program in the U.S. to achieve this distinction.

Tippett began her career as a journalist working in Berlin during the Cold War, first as a stringer for The New York Times and as a freelance correspondent for Newsweek, The International Herald Tribune, the BBC, and Die Zeit. She later became a special assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to West Germany.

She then earned a Masters of Divinity from Yale 1994, after which she saw a “black hole where intelligent journalistic coverage of religion should be.”

Tippett is author of Speaking of Faith (2007) and of Einstein’s God: Conversations About Science and the Human Spirit (2010), in which she argues that science and religion, far from being mutually exclusive, are complementary realms of inquiry.

The lecture is free, but tickets are required due to limited seating. Tickets will be available at the box office in Shriver Center beginning Wednesday, Jan. 23, for the Miami community and Friday, Jan. 25, for the general public.

The final speaker in the 2012-2013 Lecture Series is Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Science As A Way of Knowing,” April 8.
