Faculty in Spanish and Portuguese receive grant to address needs of middle and high school teachers

Darcy Donahue and Katie Fowler-Córdoba of Miami University’s department of Spanish and Portuguese have received the Ohio Humanities Council (OHC) Teacher’s Institute grant for Summer 2013.

The grant award supports seminars designed to enrich teachers’ understanding and appreciation of the humanities subject they teach. The OHC encourages institutes that explore immigration stories and experiences by specific ethnic groups that have moved to Ohio.

“This is a great honor for our department, CAS and the university,” said Shelly Jarrett Bromberg, chair of the department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Donahue and Fowler-Córdoba, co-directors of the institute, say the Ohio Humanities Institute’s “Ohio Hispanic/Latino Community: Literary, Cultural and Pedagogical Perspectives” is designed to address the needs of middle school and high school teachers from a variety of academic disciplines.

The institute will provide them with direct contact with the Hispanic/Latino community in the greater Cincinnati area through field trips to community centers and visits by guest speakers.

Institute participants will have the opportunity to collaborate in the creation of instructional materials, which will incorporate Latino experience and enhance the learning experience of all their students, ultimately contributing to greater communication between the educational system and the Spanish-speaking community.
