To the Miami University Community:
It is with deep sadness that I share with you the news of the death of sophomore James Michael "Mike" Spurgeon, 42, a pre-nursing student on the Hamilton campus. Mike passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 1 at Fort Hamilton Hospital.
Mike was valued as a peer tutor in learning assistance and as a campus ambassador in the admission office on the Hamilton campus. He was a fixture on campus as a tutor and as an ambassador and his presence will be missed.
The university extends sympathy to Mike's family, including his wife, Kelly, a current Hamilton student, and his many friends. Anyone at Miami who feels a need for support should call the Hamilton student counseling service at 786-3211.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the First Baptist Church of Ross, 2573 School Road, Ross.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions will be appreciated to The Mike Spurgeon Memorial Fund at any Chase Bank location. The Webster Funeral Home, 3080 Homeward Way at Route 4, Fairfield, is serving the family.
