Startup Weekend promotes entrepreneurial thinking

02/06/2013

Startup Weekend - a 48-hour immersion event that challenges individuals to take ideas and turn them into businesses - takes place Feb. 8-10 in Benton Hall at Miami University.

Hosted by the Institute for Entrepreneurship, this is the second Startup Weekend at Miami. Last year, Miami was the first university to host such an event.

During the weekend, participants first pitch their ideas to their peers, then teams form around the topic ideas, as determined by popular vote. Then the 48-hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing and market validation begins. The weekend ends with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders.

Miami students can earn course credit, and the winning team will be awarded up to $25,000 for a proven and marketable startup business from the Miami University Student Venture Fund, a student organization that supports student and alumni entrepreneurial ventures.

Startup Weekend is a non-profit organization that is headquartered in Seattle, Wash., has organizers and facilitators located in over 200 cities across the world. In February 2012, Miami was the first to host this event on a college campus.

A list of weekend activities can be found online.
