Predictive analytics topic of Miami's 2013 Statistics Colloquium

Statistician Bryan Bell (Miami '04), will discuss "Using Predictive Analytics to Manage Enrollment at Post Secondary Institutions," 4 p.m. Thursday, February 7, in 365 Upham Hall.

Bell, who received his master’s degree in statistics from Miami, is the managing director and founder of Target Enrollment Group, which provides data and analytic solutions aimed at improving upon the successful recruitment and retention of students within higher education.

The lecture will present two case studies in enrollment management, displaying the different predictive modeling techniques that can be used by enrollment managers to gain a better understanding of the historical characteristics seen in both prospective and enrolled students.

Target Enrollment analyzes data and certain characteristics that show what the best strategies are for not only recruitment purposes, but also retention. The technique, called Enrollment Modeling, is used as a predictive measure to analyze specific behaviors of individuals throughout the enrollment process.

Byran Smucker, assistant professor in Miami’s department of statistics, said Bell’s discussion will serve as a great kick off to the 2013 Statistics Colloquia, which provides current statistics students with knowledge and direction for their future. Smucker says he hopes students will gain perspective on the types of careers that are out there for statisticians.

“As students, you have only a very limited idea of what people actually do with statistics, and to get alumni that have, you know, been through this stage of their career gives them some idea of what to take…what sort of things did they have to go through,” said Smucker.
