Performance artist Tim Miller will present
Performance artist Tim Miller will present "Us" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Leonard Theatre
Performance artist Tim Miller will present his one-man show "Us" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Leonard Theatre, Peabody Hall. The performance, which contains nudity, is free, but tickets are required and available at the Miami box office.

Miller will be in residence at Miami Feb. 11-16, working with theater students and Polly Heinkel, alumna and visiting faculty in theater.

Miller, an internationally acclaimed solo performer, is one of the “NEA Four” - performance artists whose National Endowment for the Arts grants were overturned in 1990 under political pressure because of gay themes in their work. They successfully sued the federal government for violation of their First Amendment rights (though part of Miller’s case was overturned in 1998).

Since 1999, Miller has focused his creative and political work on marriage equality and addressing the injustices facing lesbian and gay couples in America.

“Us” re-thinks the American musical as inspiration for radical politics and queer identity

“Us,” nominated for a 2005 New York City Drama Desk Award as Best Solo Performance On or Off Broadway, moves between Miller’s love affair since childhood with Broadway musicals to an exploration of gay marriage, exile and the injustices lesbian and gay people face in the U.S.

"As a rallying cry for gay rights, Tim Miller's "Us'' contains a sweet-spirited, honest and seriously funny commentary on the power of popular art to shape people's moral, social and sexual development. Miller is, as always, a frisky and charismatic performer," New York Times.

Miller is also the author of the books SHIRTS & SKIN, BODY BLOWS, and 1001 BEDS, an anthology of his performances and essays that won the 2007 Lambda Literary Award for best book in Drama-Theatre.

He is a co-founder of Performance Space 122 in Manhattan and Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, Calif.
