African American Read-In Feb. 20 part of Black History Celebration Events

Upcoming Black History Celebration events at Miami include the 24th annual African American Read-In 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Howe Writing Center in King Library.

The Read-In encourages the celebration of all aspects of the African American experience, including the reading of selections from all literary genres, the display of artistic works, and music and dance performances.

Those who would like to read, or share a work other than a reading, are asked to register here.

All are welcome to come and listen and enjoy refreshments. The Read-In is sponsored by the Miami University Libraries and the Howe Center for Writing Excellence.

The Black History Celebration Film Series concludes with "The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975" at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Shriver Center Heritage Room.

Facilitated by Rory Johnson, visiting assistant professor of comparative religion. All are welcome. The film series is sponsored by the office of diversity affairs and the Center for American and World Cultures.

Finding Freedom: Memorializing the Voices of Freedom Summer Book Signing

Jacqueline Johnson, archivist of the Western College Memorial Archives, will hold two book signings to celebrate the publication of Finding Freedom: Memorializing the Voices of Freedom Summer. The book, edited by Johnson and published by the Miami University Press, is the first to provide detailed information about the Freedom Summer Memorial on the campus of Western College at Miami.

• 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Shriver Center Bookstore.
• 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in Leonard Theater, Peabody Hall

Johnson serves as chairperson of the national Mississippi Freedom Summer Conference that will be held at Miami in 2014.

Miami’s 2013 Black History Celebration events began last month with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace March and Commemoration program Jan. 21.
