In memoriam: Leo Erik

Leo Erik, 88, of Oxford, died Monday, March 4, at Woodland Country Manor. He was employed at Miami University as a maintenance repair worker in several departments throughout the years, including the recreational sports center from 1999-2009.

Erik began as a custodian in November 1968 in the maintenance department and left in 1970. He was then re-employed by Miami in 1983 in the department of physical facilities as a custodial worker and was promoted to a maintenance repair worker. He retired from Miami in 1993. He was then re-employed in 1995. At the recreational sports center he worked part time servicing fitness equipment and working the customer service desk.

"Leo was one of the most identifiable and beloved staff at the rec center. Customers and former student staff continued to ask how he was doing on a daily basis after his retirement. He had an incredibly rich life as a child of the Great Depression, Estonian WWII veteran and POW, immigrant, farmer, Miami staff member and an advocate for youth in the community," said Ron Siliko, senior director for custodial services and facilities management at the recreational sports center.

"He loved sharing his experiences with the students and providing life lessons. He was an invaluable part of their Miami education," said Siliko.

Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 8, at Ogle & Paul R. Young Funeral Home, 5086 College Corner Pike, Oxford. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, followed by burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Condolences may be sent online to
