"Bro Code" movie addresses sexism in pop culture

03/20/2013

Tom Keith
Tom Keith
Tom Keith, a filmmaker, anti-sexism activist, author and lecturer, will present his film, "The Bro Code: How Contemporary Culture Creates Sexist Men," followed by a discussion, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 25, in 102 Benton Hall.

Keith will provide a look at the forces in male culture that condition men to dehumanize and disrespect women. He will look at movies and music videos that glamorize womanizing, pornography that trades in the brutalization of women, and comedians who make fun of sexual assault.

“The Bro Code” makes the case that there's nothing normal or inevitable about such a view of American manhood and challenges young people to fight back against the resurgent idea that being a "bro" – and a man – means glorifying sexism, bullying and abuse.

The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the division of student affairs, the Miami Masculinities Committee and Interfraternity Council.
