Jane Karnes Straker, senior research scholar in Miami University's Scripps Gerontology Center, received the president's award from the Council on Aging (COA) of Southwestern Ohio.

The award recognizes individuals who take risks to improve the lives and living conditions of seniors. It was presented by Hamilton County Commissioner Greg Hartmann and COA Board Chairman William Thornton Jr.

Straker, also an adjunct professor in sociology and gerontology, provided many years of research, analysis and scholarship that have helped many other organizations understand and plan for the needs of aging populations.

For more than seven years, Straker led the Service Adequacy and Satisfaction Instrument project, a customer satisfaction survey for seniors on whether or not they are happy with their home care services and home-delivered meals.

Straker has been a partner in improving the survey, which now allows COA and service providers to track and compare customer satisfaction.

In 2007, Straker became a member of the Advisory Council for the Butler County Elderly Services Program. She has served for six years, including terms as secretary and president. For three years, she has chaired the council’s service committee, which debates and decides many issues related to program operations and policies.
