Steel Band presents classical fare April 5, traditional fare April 6

Miami University Steel Band
, directed by Chris Tanner, will present two concerts: "The Art of Pan" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, and "The Soul of Steel" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, both in Hall Auditorium.

“The Art of Pan” features an all-classical music program with guest artists and emcee Mark Perzel, evening host for WGUC, Cincinnati’s Classical Public Radio.

It will feature works of Bach, Vivaldi and Chopin. Guest vocalists, including lyric tenor Marco Panuccio, will join the steel band in operatic music from “Carmen” and “Tosca;” a chorus will join the group in a performance of “Brindisi” from Verdi’s La Traviata. Violinist Harvey Thurmer, associate professor of music, will perform Vivaldi’s violin concertos “The Four Seasons” with the steel band assuming the role of the string chamber orchestra.

“Steel drum instruments and classical music may sound like an odd combination, but in fact they have been paired together since the inception of these wonderful instruments in 1940s Trinidad and Tobago,” Tanner explained. In this concert, “everything is on the table, from chamber music to orchestral transcriptions to operatic arias.”

Saturday's concert, “The Soul of Steel,” will feature traditional steel band compositions and original compositions for steel band by Tanner and others.

Tickets, $7 adults and $5 students and seniors, are available at the Miami box office in Shriver Center.
