The Titan Arum, or corpse flower, has the largest (unbranched) inflorescence in the world. Come see Miami's specimen, expected to be in full bloom by Wednesday, April 3, at the Belk Greenhouse, attached to Boyd Hall. The plant is one of fewer than 200 that have bloomed in cultivation, according to Jack Keegan, greenhouse manager and instructor of botany.

The flower, which will be about five feet tall when it blooms, was a gift to Keegan and the department of botany from botany alumna Joan McElfresh Leonard (’86), program manager at the Ohio State University Biological Sciences Greenhouse.

The corpse flower, Amorphophallus titanum, is named for its distinct odor that is similar to a decomposing mammal.

Updated information: If you’d like to see - or smell - Miami’s corpse flower, visit the Belk Greenhouse between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays. The greenhouse will be open noon-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. If the flower opens, the greenhouse will extend hours. The flower is now expected to bloom between Sunday and Tuesday.

Watch it grow - view the webcam. You can also watch a time-lapse video of its growth.

Friday, April, 5, we learned signs that will precede the bloom, as told by Caleb, a student worker at the Belk Greenhouse.
