The Miami University Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jeremy Long, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in Hall Auditorium. The free concert will feature guest soloist James Olcott, trumpet.

Olcott, professor of music, was a former director of the Jazz Ensemble for many years. In addition to teaching trumpet, Olcott conducts Miami’s trumpet ensemble and is active as a composer and arranger. He recently retired after 25 years as principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra and the Middletown Symphony Orchestra.

Olcott arranged a recent visit on campus by the Stan Kenton Alumni Band, which was in the area at the start of a two-week tour. “Touching history is the best way to describe what happened on campus Tuesday,” Olcott said.

“Members of the band, over half of which toured with Stan Kenton up to his death in 1979, gave clinics and held a 90-minute preliminary rehearsal in Presser Hall.”

Music students were witness to a “roomful of jazz legends as they read through some new arrangements written especially for the tour. They got to see how professionals work together and play inherently at an extremely high level of musicianship and skill," Olcott said.
