University Senate approves new name for regional campuses

04/16/2013

University Senate approved the April 15 consent calendar at its meeting Monday, April 15, which included a request by Mike Pratt, associate provost and dean of the regional campuses, to name the new academic division the College of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences.

Consent of University Senate also was given to naming a department of integrative studies, and a department of justice and community studies, to be housed in Miami’s new College of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences at the regional campuses.

Jim Oris, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School, presented the University Senate with revised university-wide terminology for administrative units. This terminology includes:

Division - A unit at the university that is directed by a vice president, e.g. academic affairs, student affairs, information technology, business and financial services and university advancement.

College - A unit at the university that is directed by an academic dean.

School - A unit at the university that is directed by an academic dean or is a sub-unit within a a college directed by an associate dean, director, or head.

Department - A unit at the university that is directed by a department chair.

Program - A unit at the university that is directed by a program director.

Institute - A unit at the university that is directed by an institute director.

Center - A unit at the university that is directed by a center director.

University Senate also consented to a request by the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) to be renamed the College of Engineering and Computing.

Consent of University Senate means these actions await only Miami University Board of Trustees approval at its June meeting.

“I want to thank Jim Oris and Cathy Bishop-Clark (chair and professor, Computer and Information Technology), who co-chaired the Regional Campus Implementation Committee, and Rob Schorman (regional associate dean for academic affairs), who chaired the Governance Committee, for all of their hard work and diligence,” Pratt said. “I also want to thank our department chairs, coordinators, faculty, staff and students on the regional campuses for providing thoughtful input throughout this process.”

Going forward, Pratt said, the College of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences now has information pertinent to future recruitment and on-brand marketing efforts, and will now complete the work of the Governance Committee and finalize the organizational and support structures.
