Miami students win top honors in NATS Vocal Competition


Five Miami students won top honors, including the Overall First Place Winner, in the
National Association of Teachers of Singing
(NATS) Vocal Competition held April 5-6.
The state-wide competition was the largest yet held in Ohio with 18 schools participating and 311 student performers.

The Miami student winners are:

Rebecca Herbst, sophomore music performance major: Richard Miller Award, given for the Best Performance of all First Place Winners – High School through Graduate Divisions. She also received First Place, Sophomore Women.

Kristen Whalen, graduate student in music performance: Second Place, Advanced Women;

Marcus Simmons, graduate student in music performance: Second Place Advanced Men;

James Grant Robertson, junior music performance major: Third Place, Junior Men;

Grace Deer senior music performance major: Third Place, Non-Traditional Student.

The students study in the voice studios of music professors Benjamin Smolder, Alison Acord, Audrey Luna and Mari Opatz-Muni.
