Microbiology students win presentation awards


Three Miami University microbiology students won presentation awards at the 2013 Ohio Branch of the American Society of Microbiology meetings held April 12-13.

Tomislav Ticak, doctoral student, received the Donald C. Cox Award for Best Podium Presentation for his presentation "Evidence for a novel pathway of anoxic microbial quaternary amine metabolism." His adviser is D.J. Ferguson, assistant professor of microbiology on Miami’s Hamilton campus.

Amber Siebenaler, doctoral student, received the J. Robie Vestal Award for Best Environmental or Evolution Poster for her poster "Characterization of Antarctic algae and their response to a diel: day/night cycle." Her adviser is Rachael Morgan-Kiss, assistant professor of microbiology.

Maeva Metz, sophomore microbiology major and molecular biology minor, received the Allan A. Ichida Undergraduate Research Award for her poster "Phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase C activity is responsible for the hemolytic activity of A. baumannii." Her faculty mentor is Luis Actis, chair and professor of microbiology.
