P. Renee Baernstein, associate professor of history at Miami University, received the 2013 Distinguished Teaching Award from the Ohio Academy of History at its annual meeting earlier this month. The award recognizes faculty in mid- or late-career who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to teaching and service in Ohio.

Baernstein has taught both undergraduate and graduate students at Miami since 1993. She teaches world history, early modern Europe and methods and theories of history. Her research focuses on the social, political and gender history of Renaissance Italy. Among many other publications, she is author of A Convent Tale: A Century of Sisterhood in Spanish Milan (2002). Her current book project is Gender and Marriage in Baroque Rome: The Colonna Family.

She has served on the advisory or executive boards of several journals and served as a visiting professor at Harvard University’s Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, Italy, in 2009.

“Whatever a student’s career, historical study sharpens wit, empathy and communication skills. Of course we try to keep up with changing learning styles and new media – that’s technique. But ultimately, teaching has always been about love: We share our passion for learning with students and encourage them to carry it forward in their own lives. In my view that’s our enduring core mission,” said Baernstein.

This is the fifth time a member of Miami’s department of history has received the honor from the Ohio Academy of History.
