Miami University Symphony Orchestra concert April 24 features Concerto Competition winners

The Miami University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Ricardo Averbach, will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in Hall Auditorium. The free concert will feature the student winners of the music department's annual Concerto Competition.

Chyh Shen Low, graduate student in music performance from Malaysia. He will perform the first movement of Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra. Besides winning one of the awards in the Concerto Competition, Low also received the “Havighurst Prize for Russian Music Performance.”

Sheridan Monroe, senior music education and music performance double major, will perform the American premiere of Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra by Ondrej Kukal.

Kristen Whalen, soprano and graduate student in music performance, will perform Richard Strauss’s “Three Songs,” Op. 27 with the orchestra.

Other selections by the orchestra will include “Good Friday Spell” from the opera “Parsifal” by Richard Wagner and Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain.”
