Miami to form office of research for undergraduates

04/25/2013

Miami University has announced plans for a new office of research for undergraduates that will coordinate research activity by undergraduates across the university and market programs to current and prospective students.

Recently recommended by the Undergraduate Research Committee of University Senate, the new office will work toward new goals established by the Undergraduate Research Committee in a comprehensive plan presented to University Senate April 8. (See attached PDF).

“At Miami, we’ve always encouraged undergraduates to develop a spirit of inquiry and discovery,” said James T. Oris, associate provost for research and dean of the Graduate School. “But we’ve never had an office devoted solely to coordinating and progressing undergraduate research.”

The new office will be led by a faculty director who will report to the associate provost for research and the associate provost for undergraduate studies. The office does not replace any existing research programs.

“Those programs are the foundation of Miami’s well-deserved reputation for undergraduate research participation,” said Miami Provost Bobby Gempesaw. “Our faculty will continue to lead those high-impact learning experiences.”
