Trustees approve community college partnership, land purchase

04/26/2013

Miami University trustees today (April 26) approved establishing a partnership with Columbus State Community College that will guarantee access to a Miami University baccalaureate degree for highly qualified students transferring from Columbus State.

The partner schools are committed to advancing the principles of access, quality, affordability, efficiency and economic leadership. The partnership supports the state Board of Regents' goals of increasing educational attainment for Ohioans.

Trustees approved the purchase of the former Talawanda High School and its 27 acre-grounds for the price of $1.15 million. The purchase is pending an environmental assessment and must be approved by the Ohio Board of Regents and the state controlling board.

Trustees received a report on university health care costs having a net decrease of more than $4 million in costs from 2011 to 2012. Miami is self-insured.

Trustees also approved these items:

  • awarding of contracts for design and pre-construction services for Phase II of the Armstrong Student Center, with a total project budget not to exceed $1.5 million
  • miscellaneous fees for 2013-2014, the majority of which are unchanged. Some changes include an increase of the Farmer School of Business course fee to $100 per credit hour from $75 and a new premium fee in the School of Engineering and Applied Science of $300 per semester.
  • awarding of promotion to associate professor and tenure to Judith Weiner, communication
  • the rank of emerita/emeritus for several faculty and administrators
  • two recommendations of the Committee on Naming of Campus Facilities.
