Miami to award 3,678 degrees: Author Wil Haygood keynote speaker


Acclaimed author and journalist Wil Haygood (Miami '76) is the featured speaker at Miami University's spring ceremony, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Yager Stadium. Miami will award 3,678 degrees.

Haygood’s front-page story for the Post in 2008 about longtime White House butler Eugene Allen is the inspiration for “The Butler,” a big-screen movie directed by Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels and due to be released next fall.

Miami President David Hodge will preside over the ceremony. Degrees to be award include 35 certificates, 127 associates, 3,121 bachelor’s, 376 master’s and 19 doctorates of philosophy. During the ceremony, doctoral candidates will be individually recognized and hooded; master's degree candidates will be individually recognized; bachelor's and associate's degree candidates will be recognized by division; and ROTC candidates will be commissioned.

Honorary doctorate degrees will be awarded to Haygood and to Mohammed al Barwani (Miami ’75), founder, owner and chairman of MB Holding Company LLC, a multinational corporation, in recognition of his international reputation as an innovative leader and conscientious global citizen.

Commencement will be held rain or shine. However, if severe weather is predicted, the university ceremony may be shortened and/or canceled.

Miami is implementing several new security measures this year. All bags will be checked upon entering the stadium or arena for the ceremony. Guests are asked to to leave all nonessential items in locked vehicles and arrive early.
