Assistance provided to fraternity members; fire investigation continues

While Oxford and state fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the Saturday morning (May 25) fire at the Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) house on High St. in Oxford, Miami has begun assisting the students who resided there in their academic and personal needs. While relieved that no one was injured or killed, Miami staff realize the great personal toll it takes to suddenly lose clothes, computers and other personal property.

Oxford fire fighters responded to the Fiji house at the corner of High St. and Campus Ave. early Saturday morning to battled the heavy blaze. Only two students were in the house at the time and escaped unharmed, however, 13 students were residing there while enrolled in summer classes. Miami immediately found temporary housing on campus for them.

The university will assist any of the affected students who need housing for the summer; we are lending them computers and providing some clothing. If the students who resided at the Fiji house decide to withdraw from summer classes the university will work with them to do so. Students enrolled for summer session have been advised to notify their faculty of the circumstances regarding their books and course materials being destroyed.

The Oxford fire department received assistance battling the blaze from several local fire departments. A state fire marshal has been on site and will resume investigation of the cause of the fire on Tuesday.

“We are grateful that no one was injured, and for the professional skills of Oxford and surrounding fire departments in putting out the fire,” said Barbara Jones, vice president for student affairs at Miami.

As additional needs are made known, the university will continue to support the members of the chapter.
