Rodney Coates, professor of sociology and gerontology at Miami University, received the first Global Teaching and Learning Award from Miami's office of liberal education.

The award highlights and encourages best practices in pedagogies that address global perspectives at the undergraduate level and includes a $500 professional expense stipend.

Coates developed a course that brings the world to Miami students through the use of modern technology. SOC/SJS 487: Globalization, Social Justice and Human Rights pairs Miami students with students and faculty from various countries through web-based tools. The 400-level course for undergraduate and graduate students was piloted in fall 2010.

The course includes universities throughout the United States, Russia, England, Canada, Brazil, West Indies, Mexico, Italy, and Portugal. Students interact with peers and other professors to discuss readings and projects, and they explore the implications of their ideas in a global context.

“The whole thing,” according to Coates, “is integrating technology, pedagogy and faculty partnerships to create this expansive world for our students.”

Other nominees this year included Judy Hampel (Farmer School of Business), Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy (American Studies), Nirmala Naresh (mathematics) and Kristen Williams (American Studies).

Editor’s Note: Rodney Coates discusses the development of the course in a 2012 Miami Moment.
